Electric Truck Transports Pulp Between Bäckhammar and Åmotfors

A few years ago, Nordic Paper invested in a biogas-powered freight transport. Now they’re taking the next step by adding an electric truck to their fleet.
“It feels both exciting and as the right thing to do,” says David Högström, Supply Chain Director.
A 24 meter long, and 74 tonnes heavy truck, powered entirely by electricity. That’s the massive vehicle now traveling the roads of Värmland to transport pulp from Bäckhammar to its sister mill in Åmotfors.
“This is another piece of the puzzle in our sustainability efforts. We want to leave as small environmental footprint as possible, and therefore – of course – transport is one of the areas we’re working on,” says David Högström.
Kraft Pulp on Board
At the integrated pulp and paper mill in Bäckhammar, enough pulp is produced to supply both the Bäckhammar facility and Nordic Paper’s other kraft paper factory in Åmotfors. That’s why the pulp is loaded onto trucks and driven to Åmotfors. There, the pulp is used to produce kraft paper for a wide range of specialized applications.
“The kraft paper we produce in Åmotfors is used in everything from laminate flooring and refrigeration systems to insulation in cables and power transformers. In Bäckhammar, you could say that we make kraft paper for more traditional uses, such as sacks and bags, for example. But the pulp itself is exactly the same,” explains David Högström.
“An Obvious Choice”
Since recently, part of that pulp transportation is handled by a fully electric 24-meter truck.
“It’s really exciting, of course. When we got the opportunity, it was an obvious choice to make. The team, led by our Supply Chain Manager Andreas Lalin together with Västvärmlands LBC, has done a fantastic job in making this a reality,” concludes David Högström.
